History

The Guangzhou Consulate has played a major historical role for ties between the Far East and the Western World, particularly with the United States. Dating back to the first American president George Washington, the Guangzhou Consulate has maintained ties between the U.S. and China regarding policy objectives, diplomacy, and visitor exchanges. All agreements regarding trades, treaties, and diplomacy are handled by the Guangzhou Consulate, and it remains a pivotal department that continues to facilitate the evolution of China’s international relationships.

The Current Guangzhou Consulate

Although it retains many of the original structures and policies, the Consulate is a far cry from what it was historically. It is much more conducive to foreign participation in business and commerce, particularly with the United States, and the industrial turn that Chinese commerce has taken is evident in new high rise and highway structures that now dominate the Consulate. It now serves as an effective hub for both American citizens as well as business persons, exemplifying its friendlier nature with its reduced policies and relatively lax customs.
